‘Beyond the Tide’ uses the digital transformation of coastal photographs to create contemporary high-contrast and monochrome imagery to convey themes of hypervigilance and loss surrounding, suicide and its impact on families.

In a region with the highest suicide rate in the UK, this exhibition in Northern Ireland aims to shine a light on mental health and suicide awareness, particularly among individuals over fifty—a demographic often overlooked in these critical discussions. The loss of three friends in this age group to suicide since 2016 has profoundly influenced the exhibition’s commitment to fostering greater awareness, dialogue, and stigma reduction through the narrative of the pictures. It also questions the level of support available to the families whose loved one’s lives are at risk.

The project is heavily influenced by the personal experience of being a missing person with suicidal intent.

The exhibition runs from 3 - 29 October at Arts for All in the Cityside Retail Park at Yorkgate in Belfast. The opening night event with drinks reception is at 6-8 pm on Thursday 3 October.
